5 Tools Every Beginner Calligrapher Needs

Starting calligraphy can be overwhelming. There are hundreds of nibs, inks, and papers. But the secret? You don't need much to start—you just need the right tools.

1. The Right Nib: Nikko G

For beginners, I always recommend the Nikko G nib. It's stiff enough to handle heavy hands (common when you're learning) but flexible enough to show you that beautiful contrast between thick and thin strokes. It’s the "training wheels" that let you ride smoothly.

2. A Pen Holder

If you're right-handed, I highly suggest an Oblique Holder. It helps position the nib at the correct angle for that classic slanted copperplate look without you having to contort your wrist. Lefties often do better with a Straight Holder.

"The tool is an extension of the hand. Choose one that feels like it belongs to you."

3. Quality Ink

Forget fountain pen ink—it's too watery. You need something with body. Sumi Ink or Walnut Ink are fantastic standards. They flow smoothly off the nib and dry to a beautiful matte finish.

4. Smooth Paper

The enemy of a calligrapher is "bleed." Regular printer paper will catch your nib and spread your ink like a spiderweb. Invest in Rhodia pads or HP Premium Choice 32lb Laser Paper. Your nib will glide like butter.

5. Patience (and Windex!)

Okay, the fifth tool is a cleaning kit. New nibs come with a factory oil coating that repels ink. Clean them with a little Windex or dish soap and a soft cloth before you dip. And patience? Well, that's the most important supply of all.
